Lowdown: Kinetic Kick-Off Monopolizes Saturday Glory

Above: Kinetic legend Ken Beidelman puts finishing touches on the Steampunk Shark Friday afternoon in the Kinetic Lab

Here we go again. Oh.

For those brave enough to endure the krazy, Memorial Day weekend means one thing in Humboldt County: the Kinetic Grand Championship rules all. Yes, it's that time of year again when kontraption kaptains, Rutabaga Queens and thousands of spectators will again convene with the hope that glory will manifest before them. You all know the drill at this point -- three days and 42 miles of nerd olympics between Arcata and Ferndale are unavoidable at this point. Hobart help us.

We'll focus on your best viewing options for Day One (Saturday) here: The race officially starts with the Arcata Plaza noon whistle. If ya'll show up by 11 a.m. you should have enough time to meander and gawk at all the sculptures (LoCO, as always, will post its comprehensive visual field guide shortly afterward). From there, spectators are going to want to drive safely down to Manila and venture out into the dunes to Dead Man's Drop to hopefully see unlucky races biff it. (Full course map.)

Racers will then make their way across the Samoa Bridge to Eureka's Halverson Park before collapsing. Bring them beer.
