Lowdown: For Those About to (Classic) Rock, We Salute Ye.

Forget Holly Holm throat-kicking Ronda Rousey into a failure puddle. The most recent example of stunning competitive brutality has been playing out on the local airwaves during the Classic Cover Contest on Humboldt’s most rockingest of radio stations, KWPT The Point. For the last month or so, oodles of local bands have been bribing their grandmothers for votes in the hopes of small town fame and glory.

Well, we are down to three. Thus, with the number of ambitious classic rock-respecting bands whittled down to the róck de la róck, the tournament reaches its thrilling conclusion tonight with a show tonight at Humboldt Brews. On a night also reserved for celebration of The Point’s birthday, local musical assemblages Monihan, Martin and Sleep, BluEnglish and Cold Blue Water will take the stage to determine forevermore (until next year) who is the most classic. For those about to (classic) rock, we salute ye.

In other power chord news, you can find more band joy tonight at The Siren's Song Tavern at a show headlined by The Phantom Ships -- the band features fuzz guitar professional Steve Turner of Mudhoney -- and The Fairy Rings. Check out The Phantom Ship's sound in the player below.

Less riff-drenched Friday events in your Lowdown listings farther down.
