Monday, June 10, 2013's Lowdown

After three years as co-owner and face of Eureka's Red Fox Tavern, local keyboardist extraordinaire Brian Swislow told the Lost Coast Outpost today that he and business partner Brent McCormack have closed their establishment as they search for a buyer. Contrary to what you might expect, dude seemed in high spirits.

"I'm walking away knowing I did something really good," he says. Being a touring musician himself, he cites strong positive response and support from the musicians and bands that played there over the years as a reason he considers his time at the Fox a success. In the end though, it was the support from the community Swislow says was lacking.

"We weren't making enough money to make it worth it," he says. "Eureka doesn't really have the foot traffic, so unless you have independent money it's really hard to keep a place open."

Swislow reports that he and McCormack have spoken with "four or five" potential buyers -- some are interested in keeping the club under the Red Fox banner, some aren't. But don't worry about Brian. His musical pursuits and his clothing line Fatbol keep him busy enough.

And! If you'd like to tell "Swizlo" congrats on his years of musical service you can see him on the keys tonight at The Getdown, the weekly funk jam he hosts along with Pete Ciotti and DJ Rickshaw at Jambalaya. That and more in Monday's Lowdown below.
