Russulas of the West Coast Demystified (and why you should care): What Citizen Science can Accomplish

Although easy to recognize to genus, identifying Russulas to species has remained one of the most vexing problems for identifiers. A breakthrough came because of the life long efforts of Ben Woo, first president of Seattle’s PSMS and mushroom hobbyist, whose collections were sequenced and analyzed in professional mycologist Anna Bazzicalupo’s PhD dissertation. You’ll see just how important the contributions can be of local society members such as yourselves taking part in club projects. Danny is the Education Chair for the Puget Sound Mycological Society (PSMS), helping to design and teach the curriculum for the club's mycology classes. Danny also belongs to the Pacific NorthWest (PNW) Key Council — a group of amateur and professional mycologists — and is a co-author with Ian Gibson of MatchMaker, the free PNW mushroom ID program for the PC.
