Let's Do It: The Music Of Cole Porter
The Sanctuary is thrilled to present “Let’s Do It: The Music Of Cole Porter, presented by James Zeller et al.” on Saturday June 8th.
The show, the third in the “In the Constellations Now” series, will celebrate one of the American Songbooks most elegant and distinctive composers, featuring Mr. Zeller as crooner and trombonist, performing 15 of his favorite Cole Porter songs, including classics such as “Night and Day” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”. Many of the selections have been in Zeller’s repertoire for over a decade, going back to his time as the house band leader/singer at Bar Pleiades on New York City’s upper east side.
The rhythm section will feature some of Humboldt’s finest Jazz players, Danny Gaon (Double Bass), Matthew Seno (Piano), Ramsey Isaacs, (drums). The show will feature special appearances from Katie Belknap (vocals) and the inimitable, multi-instrumentalist known as “Tree” (Baritone Saxophone, Viola, and more), who is approaching living legend status very quickly in his short time here in Humboldt.
Cole Porter (b. June 9th, 1891, d. October 15th 1964) is admired for the wit of his lyrics and the elegance of his melodies. He was born in Peru, Indiana, the winter headquarters for several famous circuses. From a young age, Porter was exposed to show business by the colorful circus performers who filled the town. With the support of his mother, he defied his wealthy domineering grandfather’s wish that he become a lawyer, and began his career as a songwriter, eventually authoring over 800 songs, mostly for Broadway musicals and Hollywood films.
Porter’s music has been recorded by Jazz singers from Billie Holiday to Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker and an almost endless list of contemporaries. His melodies have been popular with Jazz instrumentalists, notably Miles Davis and Charlie Parker.
