The Tale of the Allergist's Wife

The North Coast Repertory Theatre continues its 29th Season with the comedy The Tale Of The Allergist’s Wife by Charles Busch. The play follows the story of Marjorie Taub, the wife of a philanthropic allergist, who is engulfed in a life crisis of Medea-like proportions. Her children are grown, her beloved therapist died recently and her mother, obsessed with bowel movements, grates on her nerves. Her spirits suddenly soar when a fascinating and incredibly worldly friend from her childhood appears on her doorstep. Winner of the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for Outstanding Playwrighting. The production opens at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 25 with a benefit performance for the cast and crew.

The Tale Of The Allergist’s Wife is directed by Scott Malcolm who has been involved in theatre for sixty years. He has directed productions in many genres for thirty-five years. Malcolm has appeared on the NCRT stage in several roles over the last couple years. “The beauty of this play,” as Malcolm describes it, “is that audience members will be able to identify so clearly with the characters and situations. We all know these people either in our immediate or extended family or in our circle of friends. Common situations are enlarged, and presented with humor. No slapstick here, but rather the humor of recognition. The underlying message here is that life is not nearly as bad as one might imagine, and we can learn to enjoy the variety it has to offer even within the confines of our individual circumstances.”

The talented cast features Gloria Montgomery, Arnold Waddell, Cynthia Kosiak, Denise Ryles and Pryncz Lotoj. Scenery and lighting designs are by Calder Johnson. Costume design is by Jenneveve Hood. Kira Gallaway will stage-manage the production.

The Tale Of The Allergist’s Wife opens at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 25 with an opening night gala that includes a champagne reception after the show.
