1301 J Street's 100th Birthday Celebration

It's A Birthday Party! And You're Invited!

The Event: On Saturday, October 8th the Sanctuary will celebrate the 100th birthday of its historic building with an afternoon birthday extravaganza. This grand art party and fundraiser will feature: A silent auction, delicious foods by Blackberry Bramble BBQ, homebrewed librations, birthday festivities, interactive installations, musical odes to the years 1916 and 2016, artist demonstrations, an open house, and silkscreening. (Bring a garment to print on!) The birthday party is free and all are invited. Proceeds from food, activities, and the silent auctions will go towards growing the Sanctuary, a burgeoning community arts nonprofit. The Sanctuary building will be dressed to impress, decorated by Sanctuary artists and volunteers as a giant birthday cake. Party invitees will be welcomed in all attire, though some may choose to follow the Arcata Women’s Club dress code of 1916: Hats and gloves.

History: The Sanctuary is housed in what was once the Arcata Women’s Clubhouse, built with publicly raised funds and completed in October of 1916. Upon its completion the women’s clubhouse became a community space dedicated to lively conversation regarding women’s issues of the time and featured artful programming including spelling bees, variety shows, performances by the high school orchestra, community fundraisers, and dances. Inspired by the work of the Arcata Women’s Club, the Sanctuary takes this day to celebrate the legacy of the building.
