125 Years of Ellington: Celebrating Duke
The Sanctuary and the Humboldt Jazz Collective are excited to celebrate the 125th birthday of Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington with a concert Saturday, April 27th. The program will be made up Ellington pieces specially arranged for the occasion. Ellington recorded made over 10,000 and wrote over 1000 pieces, and the musicians have selected from this enormous output a repertoire of classics as well as little known gems.
Duke's composing is considered unique for his practice of writing for the specific individuals in his ensemble. Trombonist/arranger James Zeller is working with the same approach in arranging music for this event. He is also composing a special work for the occasion honoring Ellington.
The ensemble will include James Zeller (trombone and a few vocal features), Tree (viola, chromatic harmonica, saxophones), Gabe Lubowe (filling large shoes in the piano chair), Danny Gaon (double bass), James Forrest (drums), special guests Ramsey Isaacs and Miles Sterling Schmidt and more.
