Zero to Fierce 2022: Listening Out Loud

For the sixth year in a row, the Arcata Playhouse presents its womxn’s festival Zero to Fierce 2022: Listening Out Loud from Saturday, March 5th to Sunday, March 13th. The festival encompasses International Women’s Day on March 8th and celebrates a multiplicity of creative womxn’s work. For the most up-to-date information on event times, tickets, show descriptions, and locations go to zerotofierce.org. Festival includes virtual, in-person, and outdoor events. Guests should check the location of their preferred event. Masks are required except when eating. Must show proof of up-to-date vaccination.

Open the festival with a sunrise walk and gentle movement along the way. We will walk from the Arcata Playhouse to the Marsh and back, led by dance and theatre maker and somatic artist Laura Muñoz. The event is free - registration is not required but appreciated.

The annual Womxn's Beer Tasting is hosted by local beer enthusiast Sarah McKinney and Johanna Nagan of Blondies Food and Drink. You will be walked through the spectrum of beer styles with delicious nibbles that draw out the flavors of the beer and enhance the experience! Whether you are a seasoned beer drinker or just getting started, there will surely be a style to fit your tastes! This benefits Playhouse Arts education programs. $35 per person.

SILK VEIL EXPLORATION

Explore the art of floating and flowing silk veils with Shoshanna. Wonderful, relaxing, inspiring, and no experience is required. Shoshanna has danced all her life, and had been immersed in the Middle Eastern music and dance since 1992, with improvisational dance in conversation with live music and audience as a primary passion. Wielding giant silk veils and teaching others to do so is one of her favorite things to do. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, and friends are all welcome to this all-ages silk veil exploration.

Empowerment Self Defense is a holistic approach to self defense that includes verbal and mental self defense, such as situational and self awareness, boundary setting, assertiveness, avoidance and escape tactics, and de-escalation, in addition to physical self-defense. Danielle is a member of the Women's National Martial Arts Federation and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Class is $10 ($5 for students) in person at Redwood Raks.

In this workshop, we will translate poetic text into movement and sound. Hazel is a poet, musician and devised theatre-maker who will share a method that she employs to move between forms: To begin with words, create illustrations and then specific gestures and sounds derived from those illustrations. Participants will be asked to use their bodies in any way they find comfortable and perform for one other person. Only volunteers will be asked to perform for the group. Blending standup and storytelling, Raven recounts her difficult reproductive “choices” and contends with her primal baby making instincts. Should she surrender to the role of weird aunty OR should she start a GoFundMe to freeze her geriatric eggs? With her breeding window rapidly shrinking, she reflects on her abortions, the father of her abortions and the complexity of modern womanhood.
