Trinidad to Clam Beach Run

The Greater Trinidad Chamber of Commerce (GTCC) presents the 52nd Annual Trinidad to Clam Beach Run Honoring Ford Hess! The beloved North Coast tradition that takes runners, walkers and fans along some of the most breath-taking coastal scenery in the state, is set for Saturday, January 28th, 2017. This year the GTCC has added a Half Marathon (13.1-Mile) through Patrick’s Point State Park, in addition to the 8 ¾-Mile, 5 ¾-Mile, and 3-Mile run/walks. For race registration and information, visit www.trinidadtoclambeach.com . This run is a favorite for many, as one fan states, “I haven’t missed it for 11 years,” said avid runner of Eugene, Oregon. He’s a self-described “weekend warrior” who first ran the course as a Humboldt State University (HSU) student in 2004. “It’s the most beautiful course, and the runners are great, everything from world-class marathoners to moms pushing strollers. It’s so much fun!” The run honors the former HSU track coach, Ford Hess, who created it in 1965 to get his student runners off the couch. Hess passed away in 2012 at age 95, but the local tradition lives on and attracts over 1,200 runners or walkers every year for their choice of courses covering various distances starting in Trinidad and ending with sprints along Clam Beach. The Half Marathon (13.1-Mile) through Patrick’s Point State Park begins at 11:30 AM. The starting gun for the 8 ¾-Mile and 3-Mile races goes off at 12:30 p.m., and for the 5 ¾-Mile race at 1:30 p.m., at staggered starting lines from downtown Trinidad to north of town on Patrick’s Point Drive. The start times are set to permit runners to hit the final stretches to the finish line at Clam Beach at low tide. The most exciting and sometimes dramatic section of the race every year is the crossing of the Little River at Moonstone Beach. Depending on recent rains and the flow of the river across the sand, the crossing can be a gentle splash or an aquatic challenge. Runners at the Clam Beach finish line will be greeted by crowds, the HSU Marching Lumberjacks Band, a chili feed and a bonfire. The awards ceremony will take place on the beach immediately after the race. Join us for an After Party at the Clam Beach Tavern, just up the street from the finish line. There will be live music by Bump Foundation, delicious Caribbean cuisine from Simmer Down Café, and a Happy Hour $1.00 Off Drinks Special. A special Thank You to our Gold Sponsors, Coast Central Credit Union, SWAG, and KIEM News Channel 3. We couldn’t do it without the support of community members like you!
