"Rhinoceros" by Eugene Ionesco
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The North Coast Preparatory Academy presents Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco. Directed by Omar Gad, this adaptation of Rhinoceros is produced by North Coast Prep Juniors and Seniors who are responsible for all production aspects ranging from costuming to lighting. In the play, every character but one man turns into a rhinoceros, which helps the audience wonder, “What does it truly mean to be human?” The play runs January 23–25th at the Gist Hall Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt. The show begins at 7:30 for evening performances, with one Matinee at 2:30 on January 25th. Tickets can be purchased at the door. General admission is $20 and students are $5.
Written in 1959, the play is part of the post-war avant-garde theatre of the absurd. The play is a meditation on the author’s time growing up in inter-war Romania, where one by one his friends all became Nazis, as well as post-war French intellectualism and its penchant for excusing the horrors of the Stalin regime to promote communism. The play is meant to, in the words of Ionesco, “reveal the inanity of these terrible systems [fascism/stalinism], what they can lead to, how they stir people up, stupefy them and then reduce them to slavery.”
Berenger, the play's protagonist, serves as an alter-ego for the author. He is a drunkard and often ridiculed for his laziness. One by one the members of his town transform into Rhinoceros. Some sympathize with the rhinoceros. Some resist and then succumb. Some accept it without much thought. In the end, he is the only character to remain human.
