Ray and Marie Raphael: The Spirit of '74

Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m., Ray and Marie Raphael come to Northtown Books with their new book, The Spirit of '74: How the American Revolution Began, for a talk and book signing. Ray is well known here for his earlier books about Humboldt (An Everyday History of Somewhere, and Cash Crop), but in recent years he's focused on telling the untold story of America's revolutionary origins in such books as Founding Myths and A People's History of the American Revolution. The new book, The Spirit of '74, is a further exploration of the early days of the American revolution. Americans know about the Boston Tea Party and “the shot heard ’round the world,” but sixteen months divided these two iconic events, a period that has nearly been lost to history. The Spirit of '74 fills in this gap in our nation’s founding narrative, showing how in these mislaid months, step by step, real people made a revolution.
