No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie
Our local Deaf and hard of hearing community & sign language professionals present: No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie In the film’s plot, SuperDeafy must reveal the man behind the cape to find true love, and inspire a young deaf boy to believe in himself. The movie follows the evolution of this unique hero. A beloved character and role model, SuperDeafy has a worldwide following. He has been turned into t-shirts, posters, and dolls… and now a movie! This film marks the first time in cinematic history that a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) commercial feature film is being executive produced exclusively by Deaf executive producers, and directed by a Deaf director. The film will be 100% open captioned at every screening, which allows access to everyone, whether they use American Sign Language (ASL), or not. We are passionate about this film and strengthening our local Deaf community for many reasons. In many metropolitan areas with a larger Deaf and signing population, there are regular events to support and enrich Deaf culture. These events can include ASL social nights at restaurants, performances starring Deaf and hard of hearing people, and ASL interpreted workshops, classes, theater, and music. Unfortunately, those opportunities are limited in rural Humboldt County. These events help communities work towards equal accessibility, awareness, and respect for Deaf people and ASL as an established language. Across the US, the majority of hearing parents with deaf children do not learn ASL. Using ASL with Deaf children is the best way to support healthy development and language skills, create strong bonds within the family, and establish an identity within their culture. Media produced by Deaf people, such as SuperDeafy, does an excellent job of promoting these concepts, and giving young deaf people role models.
