Kimberly Piazza Presents: "Free Spirits: Artists & Wild Horses"

On Saturday, June 4th, 2016 the Highland Art Center in downtown Weaverville will host a reception for the group exhibit curated by Kimberly Piazza, titled: “Free Spirits: Artists & Wild Horses”. Set to open during the Trinity County Arts Council’s monthly Art Cruise, the display intends to bring awareness to the plight of the wild horse in our modern American landscape, and draws attention to the struggle of wild horse advocates to protect these majestic mustangs and the land on which they depend to survive. The celebration will feature live music by Jonathan Foster and Mark Perko with special guests from 5 to 8pm. An Artist’s Talk will take place at the Highland Art Center on Friday June 17th from 5 to 7pm. Award winning artist Kimberly Piazza’s endeavor has grown out of a lifelong passion to preserve the heritage of and advocate for humane management of America’s wild horse population. The group exhibit, personally curated by Piazza, will feature thought-provoking depictions of wild horses and their habitats in various media by artists from all over the Western U.S. and Northern California. A portion of all proceeds from this exhibit will be donated to the Wild Horse Sanctuary, in Shingletown, CA, the first wild horse refuge in the United States, and to the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of wild horses and burros. Donated funds will help defray the cost of care for rescued wild horses and burros at the sanctuary, and assist with funding legal and legislative efforts being undertaken by the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign. The Highland Art Center is a non-profit art gallery housed in a converted 1890’s farmhouse, surrounded by beautiful grounds comprised of private artist’s studios, lush gardens, a large meadow, and a shaded picnic area. The Highland Art Center open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 11am to 5pm. Admission to the gallery is free. The Wild Horse Sanctuary is a non-profit foundation dedicated to the protection and preservation of America's wild horses. The 5,000 acre sanctuary is home to over 300 rescued mustangs and burros, and is open to the public for wild horse viewing on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am - 4 pm. Viewings are free to the public. The sanctuary also offers “two and three-day trail rides where guests can view herds of wild horses in a natural setting” from May through October, for a fee. The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (www.wildhorsepreservation.org) is 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation dedicated to preserving American wild horses and burros in viable free-roaming herds for generations to come, as part of our national heritage. The Highland Art Center is part of the non-profit Snyder Highland Foundation and is located in the heart of historic downtown Weaverville at 691 Main Street. “Free Spirits: Artists & Wild Horses” will be on display from June 1st through June 26th, 2016.
