Josephine Johnson, Musician in Residence: Songs of Barns and More at Westhaven Center for the Arts

Singer-songwriter, Josephine Johnson, performs at Westhaven Center for the Arts, Saturday, May 14 at 7pm. Johnson is the 2016 Musician in Residence at Westhaven Center for the Arts and is currently researching and writing songs about Humboldt County barns. Critics describe Johnson’s sound as “Janis Joplin meets Iris Dement meets Norah Jones”—her dynamic delivery packs both a wallop of soul yet tickles with feather-light inflection.

Tickets $5- $10 sliding
Doors at 6:30 pm

Johnson will share songs from both of her self-produced, Humboldt-recorded albums, “Elemental” and “Let It All Out.” She will also debut material about barns and other new compositions. “I recently completed a song about the Graham-Long Dairy Barn in Freshwater,” says Johnson, “the discovery process was a fascinating journey into local agricultural, economic, and cultural history.” Johnson researches the history of each barn, while also cross-referencing local and regional history. “This triangulation yields a story much bigger than the barn but condensable into traditional song format,” emphasizes Johnson.

Johnson studied documentary film at Savannah College of Art and Design and went on to earn an MA in English from Humboldt State University. She spent a year in Xi'an, China, teaching university English and performing at Chinese pubs and coffee houses. When she isn’t in-house at Westhaven, Johnson divides her time between touring and teaching and performing in Los Angeles.
