These books that look like elaborate comics seem to have miraculous properties- engaging youth and elders on a wide variety of topics. Jonathan Case is a cartoonist whose work includes comics, paintings, and prose. In 2011 he released two graphic novels: Dear Creature the bizarre and critically acclaimed monster romance, and Green River Killer a true detective story for which he won an Eisner award. His most recent graphic novel, The New Deal, is a nominee for the Reuben and Harvey awards for best graphic album. Case’s work is especially noted for its sensitivity to character and expression. “Dear Creature is the smartest, most heart-wrenching and just plain fun indie I have read.” (AIN’T IT COOL NEWS) Jonathan says of his graphic novel career, “I just sort of tumbled out of doing performance art and into Dear Creature. That began my career in comics or as I like to think of it, acting on paper.” What are “graphic novels”? Graphic novels are an imprecise term used to describe a format that uses a combination of words and sequential art to convey a narrative. They have gained their place in literature via comic illustration in many genres. Humboldt County is fortunate to have this opportunity to meet and talk with an award winning graphic novelist and illustrator. Case lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Dorothy. He is a member of the Portland comics studio Helioscope but spends most of his work days out in the woods in a hammock, or at home with his girls.
