Intro to Permaculture Workshop & Site Visit
This event is FREE and open to the public. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction to Permaculture Design Presented by Marlon Gil of Rainshine Permaculture Homestead Join us on Sunday September 30that 2pm at The Campus Center for Appropriate Technology on HSU campus for this lecture and tour. Permaculture uses a set of principles and practices to create productive and regenerative human settlements. These settlements not only provide an abundance of food and resources for the humans that live on the landscape, but also offer an abundance of habitat for all types of plants, animals and community members. Lecture from 2-3pm, Tour 3:30-4-30. See examples of Permaculture in Practice through a site tour of Rainshine Permaculture Homestead. ------------------------------------------------------------------- About Rainshine Permaculture Homestead: Rainshine Permaculture Homestead is a ¾ acre property located in the center of the Freshwater Valley in Coastal Humboldt County California. Stewards Irene and Marlon Gil (myself) first moved here in 2010 as renters and transitioned into owners in 2014. The property was initially equipped with two homes, a large shop, a few well-established fruit trees and deep rich soils. From the beginning our intention was to use the land to grow food in the form of fruits, vegetables and free-range egg laying hens. Over time, we were not only able to purchase the property but recover neglected areas that had been over-run by invasive Himalaya blackberry and English ivy. This transition from renters to owners has been an incredible opportunity for us and has allowed us to use what we have learned from permaculture design and take the property to the next level of productivity. Since the purchase, we have focused our attention on planting long-lived perennial plants with an emphasis on food in the form of forest gardens. As of 2018 we have planted dozens of fruit producing trees, shrubs, vines as well as dozens of culinary and medicinal herbs. Connecting elements has also been a large focus of our design with multiple rainwater catchment systems and an outdoor shower with integrated grey water distribution. Although we have come a long way since first moving here in 2010, we still have a lot of work to do in order to reach this property’s full potential. In conjuction with multiple local organizations including the Humboldt Permaculture Guild, we have used our homestead as a living/learning center over the last few years with a focus on permaculture education. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Information will be available about the upcoming 2019 Permaculture Design Course (more on that at facebook.com/events/267437717403392)
