Huun Huur Tu

The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA), a nonprofit local arts agency, presents Huun Huur Tu, the throat singers of Tuva -- at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 17, 2016 in Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G Street in Crescent City. This is the first performance of DNACA's 34th season, which is underwritten by Caldwell & Sund Family Trust, Wild Rivers Community Foundation, Lise Hamilton, Chip & Kareen Kalvin, Bill & Kathy Maffett, Physicians of Sutter Coast Hospital Fund, Gene & Carol Schach, Tolowa Dee ni' Nation, and in-kind supporters Bicoastal Media and the Del Norte Triplicate. Huun Huur Tu has emerged as the foremost international representative of Tuva's remarkable musical culture. Tuva is a small, sparsely settled country situated at the geographical center of Asia, north of Mongolia. It is a high altitude world in Siberia with grassy steppe land, boreal forests, rushing waters and mountain ridges inhabited by birds, deer, wolves, horses, sheep and nomad's yurts. The listener can hear and sense these natural elements in Tuvan music, which features overtone singing and vocal imitations. More recently they have incorporated western instruments and electronic devices. "The Tuvans will ride into your brain and leave hoof prints up and down your spine," lauded The San Francisco Bay Guardian. The Chicago Tribune wrote "It is unfamiliar yet very accessible, and other-wordly but deeply spiritual music that is rooted in the sound of nature." Tickets for Huun Huur Tu cost $20 for general and $12 for students (kindergarten through college, full time) and are available at Del Norte Office Supply in Crescent City, Wright's Custom Framing in Brookings, and at the door beginning at 6:45 p.m. the night of the show. DNACA season tickets -- which provide a savings for general, student, family passes, and especially seniors as individual performance tickets are no longer discounted -- are available at Del Norte Office Supply or at the door. Season passes run $70 for general admission, $50 for seniors, $45 for students, and $150 for a family. Season tickets are transferable and are good for all five performances of DNACA's 34th season.
