HSU Symphonic Band Concert
Please join conductor Paul Cummings and the HSU Symphonic Band on Friday, April 21 at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall for an evening of instrumental music inspired by melodies from both the folk song and spiritual traditions, as well as themes shaped from poetic and literary inspirations. Enjoy three lovely works based upon familiar melodies from the British Isles, set by two of the great composers of music for band, Ralph Vaughan-Williams and Percy Grainger. Also on the program are two works with more sacred inspirations, including Frank Ticheli's Amazing Grace, a simple and sincere setting of the famous spiritual, and David Maslanka's Give Us This Day, which draws it's inspiration doubly from the biblical text after which the piece is titled and from the writings on the concept of mindfulness by the Vietnamese Bhuddist monk Thich Nhat Hahn. Finally, Four Dances from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein is sourced from Bernstein's own music from the Broadway show, which is ultimately sourced from the dramatic text of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. $8 General, $5 Senior/Child, Free for HSU students with ID.
