Repertoire includes a rare original from master arranger Gil Evans called "Jambangle." Evans is best known for the three classic albums he arranged for Miles Davis - Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain - but he also enjoyed a long career with his own unique ensembles. "Jambangle" comes from his 1957 album Gil Evans & Ten, and uses instruments not normally heard in jazz, such as bassoon and French horn. Featured on "Jambangle" are Brian Post on piano, Rebecca Lopez on soprano sax, and George Epperson on trombone. "Braggin' In Brass," Duke Ellington's 1938 bravura showcase for the band's trumpets and trombones, is rarely performed live because of the demands it places on the brass section, but this fall's band is up to the challenge. Soloists are Chris Cox and Kevin Blake on trumpet and George Epperson on trombone. "What Goes Around," first recorded by the Dave Holland Quintet on the 2001 album Not for Nothin', was rearranged by Holland for his big band and it became the title track of that group's first album in 2002. Featured solos are by Isaac Williams on tenor sax, Brian White on trombone, and Isaac Saltoon on vibraphone. "I Dare You" is written by the young Korean-born composer and bandleader Jihye Lee for her New York orchestra's most recent album, Daring Mind. The title is inspired by saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, who once told an interviewer, "For me, the word 'jazz' means, 'I dare you.'" Tenor saxophonist Isaac Williams is featured. "Milonga Loca" is composed by the Argentinean creator of nuevo tango, Astor Piazzolla, and arranged for jazz orchestra by Fred Sturm. Milonga is a style of music and dance related to tango, but faster and more humorous than the serious and dramatic tango. Trombonist Brian White solos. The evening closes with "Tooth," composed by Evan Weiss for his group The Funky Knuckles, a Dallas-based band that combines funk grooves with jazz improvisation. This arrangement was commissioned by the HSU Jazz Orchestra from HSU alum Dan Fair. Solos are by Max Shere on guitar and Brian Post on synthesizer.
