HICAP Counselor Training

Are you retired and looking for a meaningful volunteer experience? Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) is seeking volunteers who have 6 hours a week to commit year round to assisting seniors with Medicare advice. This position requires someone who is computer savvy, likes to explain complex regulations, and enjoys interacting with others to resolve problems.

HICAP will be holding an informational meeting on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 4:00 pm at Area 1 Agency on Aging, 434 7th Street, Eureka. HICAP provides free training to become a registered HICAP Counselor with the California Department of Aging. We are interested in recruiting volunteers who can contribute 30 hours for HICAP training, with another 10 hours for internship to become State certified. A one year commitment is required for ongoing training.

HICAP is the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program, a program of the Area One Agency on Aging. HICAP volunteers help senior and disabled Medicare beneficiaries understand their Medicare and health insurance benefits and choices. HICAP volunteers advocate for Medicare beneficiaries regarding problems with Medicare or a Medicare provider. HICAP volunteers also inform low income Medicare beneficiaries about programs to help pay for Medicare costs.
