Field Day and Farmer Training

Organic Seed Alliance (OSA) will host a field day and training for farmers at Welten Farms on Sunday, July 12, 2015, to share progress in our Northern California organic variety trials, which include over 30 varieties of cabbage, cauliflower, and kale. Participants will also learn simple techniques to conduct useful, accurate variety trials on their own farms. The varieties in the trial include well-known standards as well as exciting new varieties, all selected to perform well on organic farms. These trials are part of a larger variety trial effort evaluating vegetable varieties on farms across Northern California. Supported by Gaia Fund and the United States Department of Agriculture, these trials are helping organic farmers identify varieties that are vigorous and resilient in organic systems, while having excellent appearance and flavor. Data from these trials will be shared through the national Organic Variety Trial Database that houses organic variety trial results, and made widely available to help farmers choose the right varieties for their farms. The event will be held at the trial location, 10385 Watsonville Road in Gilroy, California, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. It will take place regardless of the weather and participants are encouraged to dress appropriately. Register today at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BTDWW2N.
