Explore North Coast Lecture Series

Explore North Coast invites the public to their free program featuring Troy Nicolini, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with NOAA’s National Weather Service in Eureka on Monday May11th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921, Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Troy’s lecture will be preceded by a short presentation from Chuck DeWitt, Restoration Coordinator for The Golden Rule Project. The Golden Rule, a 30 foot ketch made famous in 1958 for going against the Atomic Energy Commission by attempting to force a halt to atmospheric testing of Nuclear bombs. Chuck will talk about the restoration project and the festivities planned for its June 20, 2015 launch from Zerlang Boatyard at Finn Town. Troy Nicolini will provide an intuitive and in depth description of how the moon and the sun cause tides and currents. No science background is needed - simple illustrations and props will be used to make this easy to understand for anyone. Guidance on how to get tide and current information will also be provided along with simple explanations to help you interpret tide and current information for any activity near or on the ocean. Examples include topics as simple as how to use tide information to safely plan a beach walk to more complex cases such as how to use tide and current information to safely take a small boat through a harbor entrance. Troy Nicolini is with the National Weather Service office on Woody Island in Eureka. Troy has been a hydrologist and meteorologist with the local office for the past 16 years where he has worked on a range of local issues including river flooding, hazardous harbor entrances, sneaker wave deaths, tsunami warning systems, and community preparedness. Prior to that, he was a research hydraulic engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers for 10 year. For more information go to explorenorthcoast.net or send an email to info@explorenorthcoast.net.
