Elk River Watershed Restoration Day!
Elk River Watershed Restoration Day is a community volunteer event aiming to reduce erosion and help salmon in the Elk River by removing networks of social trails. Social Trails are informal trails created by human foot traffic that cause erosion. The California Conservation Corps Watershed Stewards Program in partnership with AmeriCorps, BLM, The Redwood Parks Conservancy and Friends of the Headwaters invite volunteers to meet at the Headwaters Forest Reserve Elk River Trailhead on Saturday December 1, 2018 from 10am-2pm. Off trail hiking has degraded the river bank, trampled vital vegetation and increased the risk of the public unknowingly harming spawning salmon. The event will spend time educating the public about salmon habitat and how individuals can have a positive impact in their local watersheds. Volunteers will be covering social trails with redwood needles, fallen branches, and transplanted ferns while improving areas for the public to view spawning salmon safely. A healthy breakfast and lunch will be provided with plenty of hot coffee and tea to keep volunteers warm! Carpooling is encourage and volunteers shouldn’t forget to bring a water bottle, gloves, and a smile! Hope to see you there!
