Arts Alive - DAZZLE SHJIPS - Benjamin Funke

The Black Faun Gallery presents “Dazzle Shjips” featuring Benjamin Funke's drawings, 16mm films, and abstract sculptures from January 5th to February 23rd. The Arts Alive opening takes place on Saturday, January 5th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Music will be provided by Pandemonium Jones. Benjamin Funke will give an artist talk at the gallery on January 26th at 4:00 p.m. Dazzle Ships were warships of World War I, painted in disruptive, clashing patterns to distort their appearance. The resulting illusion made it difficult for enemies to discern the boundaries of approaching ships and disguised their direction, speed, and purpose. The art of Benjamin Funke delves into this concept of obfuscation, reassembling common, mass made objects into new compositions. These sculptures emerge as an amalgamation of structured forms and negative space. The figures have the presence and the mystery of exhumed relics, reanimated from their fated resting places as cast off materials. Likewise, Funke’s 16mm projected films are reduced from their original form to distorted figures and silhouettes. “I often create work by harvesting images from the reservoirs that surround us,” he explains. “I then alter these images using digital and manual methods, trying to defamiliarize the experience so viewers are moved to reevaluate the content and context of what they see.” The Black Faun Gallery is located at the corner of 2nd and G Streets in Old Town Eureka. The gallery is open to the public Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and by appointment.
