76th Harry S. Kieval Lecture
Dr. Uri Treisman, University Distinguished Teaching Professor, professor of mathematics, and professor of public affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, will deliver the 76th semi-annual Harry S. Kieval Lecture at HSU on Thursday, May 6th, at 7:30 pm, online via Zoom. The title of the lecture is “Ruminations on Equity-Minded College Teaching”. The public is welcome to this free lecture, which is geared toward a general audience. Individuals interested in attending are invited to email the HSU Mathematics Department at math.humboldt.edu to request the Zoom link. In his talk, Dr. Treisman will explore the following questions: How do our teaching and departmental practices shape who excels in our classes and programs? How can we develop trust and pedagogical intimacy with students whose backgrounds differ from our own? How can we compensate for the vast differences in the quality and intensity of our students' prior mathematics instructional experiences? How can we manage the important politics of equity with our obligation as teachers to help our students construct their future selves? Dr. Treisman will share lessons learned in his 50+ years of wrestling with these questions both in his classrooms and in the profession. Uri Treisman is University Distinguished Teaching Professor, professor of mathematics, and professor of public affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the founder and director of the University’s Charles A. Dana Center, which works on equity-minded improvement of STEM education at scale. For his work in mathematics education, he received a MacArthur Fellowship (1992–1997) and was named Harvard Foundation’s 2006 Scientist of the Year. Uri has served as a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Education Commission of the States since 2013. For his work in supporting K–12 math education leaders, Uri received the Ross Taylor/Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award from the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (2016). For his work in strengthening undergraduate math education, he received the Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics from Mathematical Association of America (2019). For his innovations in education policy, he received the 2020 James Bryant Conant Award from the Education Commission of the States. The Kieval lecture series is named for HSU Mathematics Professor Emeritus, Dr. Harry S. Kieval, who taught at HSU from 1966 to 1979. The series includes topics on popular and/or broad aspects of mathematics attractive to undergraduates and the public.
