34th Arcata Lantern Floating Ceremony

August 13, 7:30 p.m. at Klopp Lake, at the end of South I Street in the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Began as a call from the City of Arcata’s Nuclear Free Zone Commission to promote nuclear disarmament and rededicate ourselves to the cause of peace. Became a joint effort with the City and a number of groups concerned with peace and justice, and the meaning of the event was extended to include the centuries-old Japanese tradition of lighting and floating lanterns to honor friends and family no longer with us. Groups sponsoring the ceremony include the City of Arcata, Humboldt Buddhist Peace Fellowship, GI Rights Hotline, Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Social Action Committee, Shinnyo en, Veterans For Peace, Humboldt Friends Meeting (Quakers), United States Servas and Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Everyone is invited to make a lantern at the Arcata Farmer’s Market, Saturday, September 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tables will be set up and there will be supplies and assistance. Parking at Klopp Lake will be available for the disabled; others are encouraged to ride a shuttle from parking spaces at I Street and Samoa Blvd. or the Marsh Center on South G Street, or to walk or bicycle to the event from those locations. Bring flashlights; bicyclists should have lights and wear light-colored clothing.
