DJ's Distractions

Surprise! Sawyer Calls From Jail Again

This is the second call where DJ Mike Dronkers answers the studio phone to hear an automated voice say: "This is a collect call from the Humboldt County Correctional Facility from...'Saywer'....Will you accept the charges?"

Marina Center He Said/He Said

Neal Latt from CREG talks with DJ Mike Dronkers about a percieved disinformation campaign waged against the proposed Marina Center and it's cleanup. He suggests that the title to the property's existence is questionable.

Security National's Randy Gans responds, refuting claims that the title isn't in SN/Q6's posession. He also discusses SN's relationship to Humboldt for Sunshine.

Ben Folds Copies The Chatroullette Improviser

So, some background: Chatroulette is a site that randomly matches your webcam to some other stranger's webcam.  Larry's famous Chatroulette show from a few weeks back left him forever scarred, but it was good radio.

There's a musician who's been improvising piano music based on who he gets matched up with on Chatroulette.  Speculation was that this musician was actually Ben Folds.  Not the case, it turns out.

So, with that background, Ben Folds wound up doing the same thing on stage in front of 2000 people.

Obviously, this wouldn't work well on the radio, so I hope you like it here.  Also, it's NSFW.

How Will Healthcare Reform Affect You?

Since we didn't know, we'll post this Washington Post Interactive Tool.  It asks you four simple questions.

KEET/KHUM Present: Lost Coast Sessions.

3-20-10 UPDATE: A total success.  LCS raised more money for KEET than the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss/Steve Martin/Madeliene Peyroux concert special.

LOST COAST SESSIONS is a live music show pilot featuring Ukesperience and produced by KEETand KHUM-FMLOST COAST  SESSIONS premieres March 20 at 8:05 p.m. and repeating that night at 10:10 p.m. during KEET-TV's March membership drive. Tune in and support local public television.

The music show pilot came together as a collaboration between KEET-TV and KHUM-FM to create a North Coast version of the highly popular and long-running PBS series Austin City Limits. Soon after KEET executive director Ron Schoenherr green-lighted the pilot, others were brought into the process.

Even a Hollywood director participated in the production. With the experience of directing 21 Soul Train episodes with legends such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, The Jackson 5

and Elton John under his belt, veteran television director J.D. Lobue flew himself to Eureka to volunteer to direct the program for the North Coast PBS station.

KHUM-FM’s announcer / program and music director, Mike Dronkers and announcer / assistant program director Larry Trask recorded the sound

and collaborated with KEET director of production, Sam Greene on the editing.

Arcata-based artist, Lush Newton, created the set. Graphic designer and illustrator, Zeke Smith, designed the LOST COAST SESSIONS logo artwork. Ukesperience agreed to be the guinea pig band for the pilot. Many other community members volunteered as camera operators or loaned items for the set. LOST COAST SESSIONS is a true community effort and a real labor of love.

Formed in 2006, Ukesperience blends folk and rock with a tropical twist. The ukulele-based group features unique, custom, innovative instruments in ukulele form.

Joe Koches is on concert uke and lead vocals. Jason Hodel plays tenor uke, lapsteel, and electric uke. Tim Johnston plays bass and also custom makes some of the ukes, including his bass ukuleles, the lapsteel uke, and the electric uke. Dave Sandomeno plays percussion, and Nick Moore is on drums. Ukesperience was the only US mainland performers invited to the 2008 Waikoloa Ukulele Festival on the Big Island of Hawaii.

David Byrne's Collaboration Method/Home Studio

According to this blog post, David Byrne loves to mix it up a little bit while working with others.  If you've ever wondered where his lyrics come from, you may not want overthink it:

"Once I have a melody and vocal arrangement I, or both collaborators, like I’ll transcribe that gibberish as if it were real words. I’ll listen carefully to the meaningless vowels and consonants and try to understand what that guy emoting so indistinctly (that’s me) is actually saying. It’s like a forensic exercise. I’ll follow the sound of the nonsense syllables as closely as possible — if a melodic phrase of gibberish ends on a high ooh sound, then I’ll transcribe that as a word that ends in that syllable, or as close to it as I can imagine."
