Paul McHugh: Author/Chronicle Outdoors Writer
Paul McHugh grew up in the Everglades, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas, fostering a deep love for nature and vigorous outdoor sports. At age 13, he entered a Roman Catholic seminary to study for the priesthood. He left at age 19 to complete a secular education at FSU in Tallahassee. He graduated with a summa cum laude degree in English, with an emphasis on poetry (and a minor in psychology) from FSU in 1972.
Deadlines – a new novel of murder, conspiracy, and the media, by San Francisco writer Paul McHugh.
Elderly land-use activist Beverly Bancroft is found dead on a beautiful stretch of California shoreline. Her murder, disguised as a tragic accident, plunges Sebastian Palmer into his first newspaper investigation. Veteran columnist Colm MacCay is assigned as his mentor. Palmer and a new friend, Elle Jatobá, who yearns to be a cop, begin to unravel the mystery behind the death. Then the conspirators come after Palmer.
It falls to MacCay to revive his dormant investigative skills, and persuade Elle to join him in uncovering the land-grab scheme behind the assaults. MacCay and Jatobá face a determined killer. At stake are their lives and the fate of the California coast. Their search for clues takes them from waterfront bars to a smugglers’ den, from downtown San Francisco to corridors of power in Sacramento, from the glitter of Las Vegas to an isolated monastery on the Big Sur coast. En route, MacCay must battle his dubious new bosses at the Post-Dispatch, as well as his own inner demons.
McHugh Speaks with DJ Mike Dronkers 4/16/2010 about his career, his book, and his reading at Northtown Books in Arcata.

More where that came from.
This incredible band returned to the KHUM studio before their show this evening at the Arcata Theater Lounge.
The Boston-based stringband brings a decidedly modern sensibility to an old-world sound, channeling the prodigious talents of its individual members into elegant arrangements and well-crafted songs.
The result is a radical new strain of folk music, one that bravely breaks with tradition even as it salutes the past.
What Do You Make?
This is what teachers make. Supposedly this is the most-forwarded piece of poetry ever. If you watch it, you'll see why. - MD
