The Secret Life of Spantsa
An original one-woman play created by Zuzka Sabata based on the life of Olive Oatman, the first tattooed white woman in America. She was a european-american migrant who, in 1852, found herself adopted by the Mojave Tribe at the age of 15. This highly physical performance delves into the seamy side of American expansionary history by moving beyond the standard narrative of so-called captivity stories into the inner world of a woman caught between cultures and permanently marked by murder.
Zuzka Sabata graduated from Dell’Arte International 2008 with a master’s degree in ensemble-based physical theatre. She has worked with the Dell’Arte Company as an actor, song-writer, and teacher and has represented the organization as artistic lead on a variety of community collaborations for the last 8 years. Her interest in bringing Olive Oatman’s story to the stage sprang from both a strong personal response to Ms.Oatman’s story, which she learned of from a new biography published in 2010 called The Blue Tattoo, by journalist Margot Mifflin, as well as a belief that her story can serve as a conduit for community dialogue about the unacknowledged genocide of America’s indigenous people.
