Save Our Reefs with Trinidad Coastal Land Trust

Reef Check Foundation, an LA-based international nonprofit group dedicated to conservation of tropical coral reefs and California rocky reefs, will talk about “Empowering People to Save Our Reefs and Oceans” in a free presentation on Wednesday, May 1, from 7-8 p.m. at Trinidad Town Hall. The group trains thousands of volunteer citizen scientist divers worldwide to survey the health of coral and rocky reef ecosystems. Locally, Reef Check has focused on documenting changes along the North Coast, including the large offshore “warm water blob” that has affected ocean and coastal conditions here in recent years. Impacts have included widespread losses of bull kelp, loss of sea stars from disease, the decline of the red abalone populations due to starvation, and a boom in purple sea urchin populations. Come learn more about what Reef Check citizen scientists have learned from surveys of the North Coast since 2007, and how you can get involved. For more information call Carol Vander Meer, Trinidad Coastal Land Trust director of community engagement, at 677-2501, or visit trinidadcoastallandtrust.org.
