July Open House

Local History Comes Alive through Art This month local history comes alive through unique historical paintings and photographs at Studio 299 Center for the Arts in Willow Creek. The new show, which will run through July and August, will feature oil paintings by Mike Nelson and photographs from the collection of Margaret Wooden. Mike Nelson describes himself as a designer, illustrator and painter of friendly things. Raised in Potter Valley, Mike studied art at The Academy of Art in San Francisco in the 1960’s. He worked as an illustrator for an arts services house in San Francisco after school, later designing and illustrating over 75 cookbooks. He went on to design many books, brochures, catalogs and advertising pieces for a variety of businesses in and around the bay area. Locally, Mike’s work can be seen on the labels that he has designed for his brother Bruce’s Sentinel Winery bottles. Mike always wanted to get back into oils and paint what he wanted rather than what others wanted him to draw or paint. The paintings in this show stem from his interest in the history of logging the redwoods along the California coast. Mike’s wife and her family were involved in logging in Boonville and had many great stories and old photos of logging the redwoods along the Mendocino coast, so with that and reading about logging in the 1800’s he started these paintings. Margaret Wooden is a long time Willow Creek resident who has collected historical photographs for many years, as well as photographing the area herself. She has been a driving force behind the Willow Creek / China Flat Museum where she currently serves as President. The community is invited to a free opening reception with the artists to be held on Saturday, July 11 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. The artists will discuss their work and take questions at 6:00 pm. Complimentary refreshments will be available. It is a wonderful opportunity to join your friends and neighbors in supporting the arts in our community. Studio 299 is a non-profit community group devoted to the promotion and development of the arts and arts education in the Klamath and Trinity communities of Northern California. The gift shop offers a variety of unique hand-made works by local artists. The gallery and gift shop is located at 75 The Terrace in Willow Creek. Regular hours for the gallery and gift shop are Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Completed in 2012, the multipurpose gallery offers an attractive location for the community to come together at monthly openings, open mike nights, and special events and during gallery hours.
