Jayme Stone's Folklife

The Arcata Playhouse celebrates Canada Day on Sunday, July 1st with two-time Juno award-winning (Canadian Grammy's) banjoist, composer and instigator Jayme Stone who makes music inspired by sounds from around the world—bridging folk, jazz and chamber music. Stone’s newest release, Jayme Stone’s Folklife was just nominated for a Juno Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year. The four piece band performs at the Kate Wolf Festival and then brings their magic straight to Humboldt. Featuring Jayme Stone (banjo, voice), Moira Smiley (voice, accordion), Sumaia Jackson (fiddle, voice) and Andrew Ryan (bass, voice), this collection of stellar musicians brings to life Stone’s most recent project with a lively exuberance. This gathering of versatile musicians blows the dust off of old songs and remakes them for modern ears. The album is a musical journey through the Appalachians, the Sea Islands and the Caribbean. With spellbinding singing and virtuosic playing, the repertoire reaches into the arcane corners of American roots music with shape note hymns, Gullah spirituals and Creole calypsos. The album features singer extraordinaire Moira Smiley (tune-yArDs), Grammy-winning songster Dom Flemons (Carolina Chocolate Drops), cornetist Ron Miles (Bill Frisell), singer Felicity Williams (Bahamas) and more.. Think Sea Island spirituals, Creole calypsos and stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes. The Globe and Mail called Stone “The Yo-Yo Ma of the banjo.” And the Washington Post wrote “It sounds like a whole new instrument.” Make a trip down to the Arcata Playhouse and hear this great band.
