Humboldt Photograpy Exhibition

The Humboldt Photography Exhibition is on tap for July as it makes its 11th appearance. The judged show will have $800 in prizes this year. Jenn Daly, an instructor at Shasta and Butte colleges, is the judge for the show, which is open to any photographer who lives in Humboldt County. The show is a collaboration of the Redwood Camera Club, Eureka Photoshop Users Group and the Redwood Art Association. It is not necessary to belong to any of the groups to enter work. It will run from July 24 to Aug. l6 at the RAA Gallery at 903 F Street in Eureka. Entry day is July 20 from noon to 3 p.m. The show is underwritten by Pierson Building Center. Entry forms may be obtained at the gallery or by going online to www.eurekaphotoshop.com, https://www.redwoodart.us/exhibitions.htm or www.redwoodcameraclub.com. Daly has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Chico State in photography. She earned a BA in studio photography at University of Missouri, St. Louis. She has taught at Shasta College since 2010. She also taught at Northern Michigan University. She notes that photography is unlike painting which people realize is an interpretation of what the painter sees. In photos, the discussion centers around truth. She said, “Every story of every image we’ve encountered is based on the sum of our personal experience and the information we’ve been given regarding the photograph. As documentary filmmaker Errol Morris wrote “Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but there are two words that you can never apply to them: 'true' and 'false.' " The first-place award is $250, second-place receives $125 and third wins $75. There are five $50 awards of excellence and a $100 Redwood Camera Club Founders Award. A private preview and reception for participants and guests will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 3, followed by Arts Alive! from 6 to 9 p.m.
