Humboldt Literacy Project's 14th Annual Trivia Challenge

Humboldt Literacy Project's main annual fundraiser, the Great Humboldt Trivia Challenge, enters its 14th year Thursday, May 2, 5:30 p.m. at the Eureka Woman's Club.

"Last year we heard so many compliments about our food and venue, so we're staying at the Woman's Club and getting about twice as many tacos, this time," says Executive Director Emma Breacain.

The Trivia Challenge is an evening of friendly, cutthroat trivia competition. Teams that don't have the correct answers may compete for funniest wrong answer and be awarded prizes by the Humor Judge. Audience members may cheer for their favorite team or play along, bidding on the trivia questions and having their correct answers entered into a 50/50 raffle.

Admission includes some tacos (with more available for purchase), a no-host bar, a silent auction loaded with local art, goods and services, and a literary themed costume contest for players and spectators who wish to dress as a favorite author or character from literature, with prizes awarded for best team and individual costumes.

As always, proceeds from the Trivia Challenge directly support the mission and work of Humboldt Literacy Project, which has been connecting adults who wish to improve their reading and writing with volunteer tutors for free, confidential, one-on-one English language studies since 1981.  About 15% of adults in the United States are functionally illiterate, affecting a estimated 14,000 Humboldt County residents, their families, friends, and workplaces.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Team registration is $100. A team needs three players and a clever name, and teams must register before Friday, April 19. For more information, visit humlit.org or call 445-3655.
