Golden Tarp Award Entries Sought

Entries for the 1st annual Golden Tarp Award in September are now being accepted and cultivators have until August 21 to submit their entry into this first-ever light deprivation cannabis competition.

The Golden Tarp Award is both a celebration of Humboldt’s cannabis culture and a cannabis competition highlighting the light dep method, a cultivation technique that utilizes tarps to manipulate the light cycle of cannabis plants with minimal electricity use. Held at the Mateel Community Center in Redway, the party will go from noon to 10 p.m. on September 13, 2014, featuring entertainment, information and celebration all day.

Cultivators can enter strains into the category they think best suits their flowers:

  1. Floral -- examples: Blue Dream, Green Crack, Bubba’s Gift
  2. Fuel -- examples: OG, Chem Dog
  3. Earth -- examples: Bubba, Pure Kush, Hindu Kush
  4. Fruity -- examples: Agent Orange, Mendo Purp

Each entry will be tested through Pure Analytics and only samples free from pathogens, pesticides, chemical growth regulators, and/or fungal growth will have a chance to move forward in the competition.

The four strains in each category with the highest total cannabinoids (and that test clean) will move on to the next round and be judged the day of the event.

The pool of judges will be chosen at random from people who attend the event with a valid 215 recommendation. Judges will rate the top 16 strains. The strain with the highest score at the end of the night wins the 1st annual Golden Tarp Award, which is a locally handcrafted, bronze greenhouse with a golden tarp.

The entry fee is $100 and includes lab testing, a Golden Tarp Award T-shirt, one regular entry ticket, and one VIP ticket. Entries can be dropped off at Wonderland Nursery at 78 Bear Creek Canyon Road in Garberville, Collective Conscious Apothecary at 13325 South Highway 101 in Hopland, or The Humboldt California Association at 601 I St. Suite B in Arcata.
