TH01 Dawn Chorus – Arcata Marsh Field Trip 1 - $6 6:30am - 8:30am
Leader: Chet Ogan
This pre-breakfast trip is planned to catch the dawn chorus in full swing at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. Birds are on the move at this time, so there will be plenty of birding action. The willows will have songbirds singing and the reed beds will have chattering Marsh Wrens and possibly rails. The leader will explain all vocalizations, from the straight forward Mallard quack and California Quail "Chi-CA-go" call, to the more intricate sparrow calls and chips. This trip is for everyone and will provide an introduction to the skill of birding by ear.

TH02 Humboldt Bay Boat Tour 1 - NAC 7:00am - 8:00am
Leader: Maggy & Charlie Herbelin, Humboldt Baykeeper
Humboldt Bay supports mud-flat-loving shorebirds and wading birds at its tidal edge. While in deep water channels, kept open for boat traffic, fish-eating grebes, cormorants, scoters, and mergansers occur year round. Expect to see: Herons, egrets, loons, grebes, shorebirds, and deep water ducks. This trip meets at the Eureka Public Marina next to the Wharfinger Building at the start time (map will be included in registration packet).

TH03 Shelter Cove - $17 7:00am - 3:00 pm
Leader: Rob Hewitt
A new trip for 2013, a visit to the chaparral of SW Humboldt and the fishing village of Shelter Cove. This all-day trip has a bit of a drive, but worth it for a good chance of seeing California Thrasher, which is only found down here. With other forest birds, this habitat is a very different part of our county. White-throated Swifts will also be looked for in Benbow.

TH04 Godwit Mystery Tour - $17 8:30am - 3:30pm
Leader: Mystery Leader
Enjoy the suspense and fun of this mystery tour. You will never know where you are going next or who will be your field guide! This trip will remain in the Humboldt Bay Area. Some normally closed areas will be birded on this trip, prepare for a variety of terrain and weather conditions.

TH05 Bear River Ridge - $17 9:00am - 3:00pm
Leader: Tony Kurz
From Rio Del to Ferndale, this classic ridge-top route takes birders out of the forests and into extensive prairies. This 35-mile trip boasts spectacular views of Humboldt Bay, Ferndale, and the Eel River Bottoms. Golden Eagle is possible on this route, as well as other ridge-migrating raptors. Western Meadowlarks, possibly bluebirds, and Horned Larks are other bird specialists of this habitat.

TH06 Potawot Village – $12 12:00pm - 4:30pm
Leader: To be confirmed
The riparian vegetation in association with this site has been restored and developed into natural urban wildlife habitat. Join us to bird this location and other habitat patches in the area. Early spring migrants will be around as well as some wetland birds. This Native American community health clinic was designed using a “holistic” approach that incorporated nature as part of its design for well-being.

TH07 Field Test Optics Expo at the Marsh – $5 5:00pm - 7:30pm
Leader: Rob Hewitt
Festival optics representatives will have demos on hand for you to try and learn about their features to help choose the right glass for you or help you utilize your optics to your best advantage. Enjoy wine and cheese during a short demonstration inside the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, followed by a field-test session around the Marsh, with bird blinds for spotting scope use and enjoying the sunset as shorebirds gather. This event meets at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary Interpretive Center (map will be included in registration packet)

TH08 Owl Scouting Field Trip – NAC 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Leader: Sandra Hunt Von-Arb
A short slideshow will introduce some of the common owl species of Humboldt County. Help scout potential locations through the Arcata Bottoms looking for Barn Owl and Short-eared Owl, then visit various locations using tapes or voice calling to elicit responses from the nighttime forest owls. Sandra is an experienced "owler" and can demonstrate various calling techniques. This trip will be cancelled by rain. Requires good luck, a flashlight and warm clothes.
