Dr. Steve Sillett Presentation

Explore North Coast Seakayaking Association invites the public to a presentation by Dr. Steve Sillett on a tree-level approach to understanding the growth potential of coast redwood and other tall tree species. The presentation will take place on Monday September 15 from 6-8 p.m., at Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Dr., Eureka. Call 825-9221 or email info@explorenorthcoast.net for more information. Dr. Sillett and his team have been conducting ongoing research in coast redwood and giant sequoia forests that has quantified world-record above ground biomass and rates of carbon sequestration in California. Extension of this work to other forests dominated by tall species--Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce and two species of Eucalyptus in Australia (regnans, globulus)--has revealed a universal truth about trees: rates of wood production (and carbon sequestration) continue to increase with size through old age. In other words, the largest and oldest trees in a forest are the most productive.
