Domestic Violence Prevention Awards

Sheri Johnson, chair of the Board of the Humboldt County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council announced this year's awards. The awards honoring and recognizing those who have made outstanding contributions to the prevention of domestic violence will be presented Wednesday, October 29th from noon until 1:30 at the Humboldt Area Foundation. This year’s recipients are: The Humboldt County Adult Services Division -- Shawn Burger, Senior Probation Officer, Shaun Brennaman, Division Director and Kevin Samsel, Supervising Probation Officer; Carey Call, now at D.A. Victim Witness who is being honored for her work at Humboldt Domestic Violence Services and; Two people from Humboldt State University’s Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Stalking. They are Mary Sue Savage, Prevention Coordinator, and co-founder of the CHECK IT! program, a unique effort working on transforming the university culture with particular attention to promoting bystander intervention, and Maxwell Schnurer, Professor and Chair of the Communications Department and co-chair of the committee. Previous recipients include: Hon. Christopher Wilson, Judge, Superior Court, Jorge Matias of Pasa a Paso, and Meg Walkley of the Child Abuse Prevention and Coordinating Council,Vicki McCulley of the D.A.'s Victim Witness Unit, Madison Evans of the Northcoast Rape Crisis Team, Kim Schneider of Humboldt Domestic Violence Services, Amy Whitlatch and Simone Taylor of the Redwoods Community Action Agency, Pasquale Romano of Mend/Wend, Joyce Moser, D.A. Victim Witness Unit, T. Diane Green, Cassie Burgess, Viva Campbell, Spare Change, HSU Police Chief Lynne Soderburg, Nicole Bockelman of the D.A.'s office, Kim Berry, chair of the Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department at Humboldt State University, Chief Garr Nielson of the Eureka Police Department, Oceana Madrone, Humboldt Domestic Violence Services, the D.A. Victim Witness Unit and Cynthia Ryan of the Sequoia Humane Society. The video on domestic violence developed by the National Football league (featuring a coach and former player) will also be shown. It focuses on men being allies to survivors, taking responsibility to oppose domestic violence, and what being a team really means.
