Ashes to Go on the Arcata Plaza on Ash Wednesday

On Ash Wednesday, February 14, Arcata’s St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will be offering “Ashes to Go,” a new approach to a centuries-old Christian tradition, on the Arcata Plaza between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church is part of a new nationwide movement that has clergy and lay people visiting transit stops, street corners, coffee shops, and college campuses to mark the foreheads of interested passers-by with ashes and invite them to repent of past wrongdoing and seek forgiveness and renewal. The Reverend Sara Potter of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church explains that, “Lent comes from the word for lengthening of days as we head into Spring. In the life of the Church this is a season of spiritual renewal, marked by repentance or change, in the face of our mortality. The ashes of Ash Wednesday are a sign of our mortality and our intention to seek renewal and a changed direction Godward. Ashes to Go is a way to mark that new beginning publicly and in a way that connects the traditions of faith with everyday life.” Saint Alban’s welcomes LGTB people.
