An Afternoon with Edgar Allan Poe

On January 19, 1809 the world saw the birth of one of America’s greatest authors. Edgar Allan Poe was a writer, a poet, a literary critic, and a discerning commentator on contemporary society. He is credited with the creation of the ‘detective story’ with his armchair investigator C. Auguste Dupin in 1841, 46 years before the appearance of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, and is recognized as a master of the macabre tale and weird fiction with classic stories that include ‘The Pit and the Pendulum’, ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, and ‘A Cask of Amontillado’. Sadly, Poe’s genius was not recognized in his native land during his lifetime, although the French hailed him as a genius in the fantastique. Indeed, his life was plagued with a great deal of sorrow due to his drinking, the death of his wife to tuberculosis, and his own ill health and erratic behavior. Fortunately, time has judged him far more honestly than many of his contemporaries, and has secured his place as a central figure not only in American literature, but throughout the world. In honor of his 208th birthday, we invite you to join the Lost Coast’s own macabre practitioner, Carpathian the storytelling spectre, on Sunday, January 22 at 2:30 pm for readings of two of his finest stories, ‘The Masque of the Red Death’ and ‘The Tell Tale Heart’, at Old Town Coffee & Chocolates. (A certain feathered friend may also make an appearance…) Carpathian has appeared at numerous film festivals, Renaissance Faires, haunted attractions, libraries, conventions and other venues throughout the United States, and was a featured presence for ten years at The Six Flags America FRIGHT FEST in Largo, MD, leading his company The Patient Creatures. He was nominated in 2003 for a Rondo Hatton Award for Special Presentation and in 2002 for Outstanding Media Presentation for his CD, “3 Tales of Carpathian;” his stories run the gamut from classic campfire tales to macabre fables. Come join us for the celebration and raise a toast to an American literary icon! Your table awaits… Admission is free; this is a family friendly event, but is not recommended for very young children.
