200-Mile Klamath Salmon Relay Run
The event begins at sunrise on May 24 with a brief ceremony at Requa, the mouth of the Klamath River. From there, Yurok, Karuk, and Hoopa Tribal and non-Tribal community members will run a long distance relay, traveling upriver to where the Klamath dams block hundreds of miles of salmon spawning habitat. Hoopa Tribal members and students will run up the Trinity River ending at Trinity Valley Elementary School. Runners will be accompanied by a lead car towing traditional redwood dug-out canoes and drummers. Elementary school students will join the run and parade through the town of Orleans Friday afternoon. Participants will enjoy a celebratory dinner and spend the night at the Karuk Tribe’s gym in Happy Camp before continuing Saturday morning towards Iron Gate Dam.
