Thursday Lowdown: Blitzen Trapper
To refer to Blitzen Trapper as indie folk, probably their most commonly assigned genre stamp, doesn't really take into account the diverse palette of sounds the group dispatch throughout their music. They're artsy. They're Americana. They're big sounding, but restrained. Most importantly for Humboldt ears though, they'll be here --specifically, Thursday night at HumBrews.
Brief band history: the Portland-birthed ensemble "broke through," as they say, with their 2007 album Wild Mountain Nation and its title track (can you say Rolling Stone magazine's 98th ranked song for 2007? Woot.) Acclaim earned them a spot on fabled Sub Pop records, which meant that their next album's title track -- "Furr" off Furr -- was No. 4 on the 2008 version of aforementioned list. (Oh, lists.)
So, ya. For what it's worth, major music magazine's approve of the band that's playing off-Plaza tonight. Need some actual sound to decide if they're worth your entertainment dollar? LoCO's got that. For a sampling of BT's particular approach to tactful soundscaping, check out this video for "Girl in a Coat" off their most recent album American Goldwing.
If that don't grab ya, other options below in Thursday's Lowdown.
