Reports are coming in of a tower of smoke emanating from the Palco marsh wetlands behind the Bayshore Mall. Humboldt Bay Fire Department confirms that two fire engines are on the scene and estimate they will have the grass fire out within the hour.
HBFD's Rusty Goodlive spoke to KHUM's Mike Dronkers about the blaze, that audio is included below.
The photo below from the Bayshore Mall parking lot was provided by reader Laura Netz.
And finally below KSLG's Eli Rohl vined the scene.
KHUM spoke with the National Weather Service's Ryan Aylward, who said the wind turned.
"We have an upper low set up off the coast south of San Francisco, and that switched our winds around to out of the east. And there are multiple fires now in the Sierras, and then additionally there are fires nearby in our area up in northeast Humboldt county and southwest Siskiyou county... all that smoke is now drifting our way and it's created some really hazy conditions out there."
This means 1) you can finally employ your understanding of the coriolis effect and 2) get to a beach by sunset tonight.
