Companion Animal is one of the most promising local bands in years. Brooding melodies nest snugly amid synth lines and driving rhythms, evoking The Smiths and Death Cab For Cutie. And while most Humboldt bands have at least some element of spacious noodling, which is fine, Companion Animal's succinct arrangements leave no room for clutter between your ear and their earworms.
