What Causes Humboldt's Pedestrian Fatalities?

This morning saw another tragic fatality on Humboldt county streets. According to 2010 state data (above), Humboldt county already has a high rate of pedestrian-vs-vehicle collisions. But why? 

  • Is it the way the intersections are designed?
  • Is it a community unaccustomed to sharing the road?
  • Do we have enough traffic enforcement officers on the ground? 

Emily Sinkhorn from KHUM's Happy Trails and the Redwood Community Action Agency talks about the myriad problems that contribute to unsafe streets locally, and she says there's no silver bullet.
