Upstage Live: Robbie Fulks & Jenny Scheinman
Mike Dronkers / Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 @ 3:52 p.m.
You want to hear touring musicians talk about how they just want to stay in Humboldt?
Fulks tells you how one of his kids may be smarter than the others, if objectively good music exists, and when it's time to buy a new guitar.
“The great Robbie Fulks: a Chicago area country/alt-country genius. Why are you still listening to me? You should be going on iTunes right now. R-O-B-B-I-E. F-U-L-K-S. Buy it, buy everything.” – Tina Fey
Fulks' 'Gone Away Backward' was just named to Rolling Stone's Top 10 Country Albums of 2013 list.
"The Yankee singer whose country songs have seemed as much genre satires as reverent craft exercises (see "Fuck this Town") makes what might be his most seamlessly integrated set. It's mostly unplugged, rooted in bluegrass and old-timey styles, and beautifully sung. And it makes peace with a tradition that Fulks is now fully part of, Ivy League wit and all. "Can't tell I'm country? Just you look closer," he sings on the potent "That's Where I'm From," one of many songs Nashville songwriters could learn a thing or two from."
